Live Music: Scuttlebuggs + Lillies in My Brain

9.30pm - Scuttlebuggs - an indie rock band originally based out of Chicago and now living on the open road. Their original songs are focused on lyrical content, unique melodies and harmony, and have been likened to Neil Young, Yo La Tengo, Pavement and Phoebe Bridgers. They've toured extensively around the US and Japan and are headed for a UK tour in August of 2022.

Scuttlebuggs have released one album, three EPs and two singles to date - music videos for their newest singles ("Trout Town" and "Hey There, Skipper!") were picked up for worldwide network premieres by DittyTV, and the music has received radio play on indie stations across the globe. SBuggs are currently preparing their next full length album for release this summer as well as working on a follow up LP. The lyrics have been described as "genius, they serve as a punch in the stomach through their pensive penning through a style Nick Cave would even approve of." [A&R Factory] The music has also been reviewed as "raw", "edgy", "beautiful" and "positively life-affirming". [Leicester Bangs]

8.45pm - Lillies in My Brain - formed in 2020 after many years on stage, playing covers in wedding bands and desolate cafés. The founding members, two friends who met not far from the Spanish border on the French side of the Pyrenees, spent a long time studying their favourite artists and writing songs. They eventually moved in together, recorded hundreds of demos on a small Yamaha mixer and supported themselves working small jobs and playing gigs on the coast. In 2019, they moved to the UK and started recording what would become their debut album. A collection of twelve songs, some of which were written years before in an icy apartment next to an old second-hand stove. “I remember listening to the Pixies, Nirvana and The Smiths on a loop, just trying to figure out what it was that made those songs so poignant.” This obsession with songwriting pervaded throughout the recording of 21 = 2a + 7. A very honest depiction of their frame of mind at the time, Lilies in my brain’s debut takes on a candid look at feelings of loneliness, the courage to be oneself, love and intimacy, and an appreciation for life’s trivial moments
